The Wounded Traveler on the Jericho Road

A beaten traveler lies half-clothed on a barren wilderness road, his body left exposed among stones, dust, and desert scrub as the sun breaks over the rocky hills. The setting evokes the road from Jerusalem to Jericho in Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, where a man was robbed, stripped, beaten, and abandoned half dead before mercy came from an unexpected neighbor.

The empty path and harsh landscape emphasize the danger, isolation, and vulnerability at the heart of the parable. Before the Samaritan enters the story, the wounded man represents every suffering neighbor whom religious status, social boundaries, or personal convenience can tempt others to ignore. In Luke 10, Jesus defines true neighbor-love not by identity or proximity, but by compassionate action: seeing need, drawing near, binding wounds, and giving costly care.
