Behind him, his companions approach in grief, beginning the long vigil of silence described after Job’s calamity. The wilderness setting, scattered stones, and empty horizon emphasize the stripping away of wealth, health, and earthly comfort. This artwork portrays Job 2, when Satan afflicts Job with loathsome sores and Job remains steadfast before God.
