Worship of the Golden Calf

A gilded calf rests upon a raised altar as smoke rises around it and the gathered Israelites lift their hands, staffs, and voices in celebration. The scene portrays the grave moment at Sinai when the people turned from the unseen Lord and made an idol for worship while Moses was on the mountain. The calf, enthroned like a false god, becomes the central symbol of covenant betrayal and misplaced trust.

In Exodus 32, Aaron fashions the golden calf from the people’s ornaments, and Israel declares a feast before it. The image captures the disorder of worship detached from God’s command: devotion becomes spectacle, and deliverance from Egypt is wrongly credited to an image made by human hands. This subject is fitting for teaching on idolatry, repentance, covenant faithfulness, the Ten Commandments, and the holiness of worship.
